Position Description 

The Center for Policing Equity (CPE) is looking for a skilled Staff Accountant with 2 to 3 years of experience with an unwavering passion for social justice issues. This position will report to the Vice President of Finance & Development and works in a collaborative effort with our external accounting partner. The Staff Accountant will oversee the day-to-day financial operating and bookkeeping tasks. This position requires a high degree of independent decision-making and accountability. Under the supervision and in conjunction with the Vice President of Finance & Development, the Staff Accountant will ensure CPE and its staff are in compliance with internal fiscal policies and state & federal regulations, including working knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP). CPE has approximately 40 staff and operates on a $8M annual budget.

Key Responsibilities

  • Reconcile general ledger accounts by gathering and balancing information
  • Process project related account payables
  • Assist in month-end closing processes
  • Ensure internal accounting KPIs are met
  • Assist in budget review of individual grants and prepare budget revisions when needed
  • Generate year to date budget comparisons, and forecast utilization of budgeted funds
  • Maintain QBO fund accounting of appropriate expenses for each grant to invoice
  • Ensure supporting documentation is available and prepare reimbursement requests to funders including QBO reports to support the reimbursement request 
  • Enter receivables and income in QBO and track and enter payments
  • Ensure internal controls and appropriate authorizations/signatures are in place for all accounting tasks and that fund accounting and approved cost allocation methods are used among grants

Qualifications

  • Strong knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles and best practices
  • Familiarity with non-profit structures, practices and organizational cultures
  • Excellent soft-skills for working amongst the accounting and development teams
  • Proven ability to work independently and as a self-starter
  • Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment 
  • High attention to detail and ability to prioritize the completion of multiple projects assigned simultaneously
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills for internal and external stakeholder interactions

Requirements 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance
  • 2 to 3 years experience with QuickBooks Online
  • Proficient use of Google Suite and Microsoft Excel
