Gender Identity & Safety
In recent years, several states have enacted laws imposing civil penalties and criminal bans targeting pregnant people, transgender individuals, and the LGBTQ+ community. These laws do not address community safety needs, and instead threaten the health, rights, and safety of all through invasive surveillance, a delay or denial of life-saving care, and a misallocation of police and city resources, to name a few. Local governments and police departments should deprioritize enforcement of these morality laws and instead consult with affected communities, advocates, and healthcare providers to mitigate any harmful effects and safeguard the rights and safety of all.
