Dr. Phillip Atiba Goff on the Deadly Attack on U.S Capitol Police

April 02 2021

Today, Center for Policing Equity CEO and Co-Founder Dr. Phillip Atiba Goff released the following statement on the deadly attack on U.S. Capitol Police:

Less than three months after the January 6th insurrection, today’s attack on the U.S. Capitol Police — which killed Officer William Evans and seriously injured two others — is another devastating loss for the nation.

We do not yet know this murderer’s motivations. We do know this: Attacks on our systems of democracy are not just attacks on the people who guard them. They are attacks on all of us, and particularly on vulnerable communities who will suffer the most if norms against political violence continue to crumble.

Our hearts are with the family and friends of Officer Evans, the officers injured today, and everyone around the country forced to endure a seemingly unending parade of violence. Barely a week removed from the mass shooting in Boulder, Colorado,we remain inspired by the sacrifice of those who place themselves between danger and the communities they serve. We remain infuriated that their sacrifices are so necessary and so frequent.
