Center for Policing Equity’s Compstat for Justice Program Announces Partnership with Seattle Police Department

October 21 2020

Today, the Center for Policing Equity (CPE)’s COMPSTAT for Justice (C4J) program and the Seattle Police Department (SPD) announced a partnership to reduce, with the goal of eliminating, racially disparate policing and produce public safety worthy of community trust.

C4J uses data to design strategies that are directly informed by science, allowing communities to redesign public safety in a way that is responsive to their needs. With C4J, CPE provides stakeholders with the information to ensure the public is safe and their dignity is respected.

This partnership comes at a time when Americans are overwhelmingly calling for equitable public safety systems. The nation knows that everyone is safer when public safety is worthy of trust - and C4J’s goal is to make that possible.

“C4J provides a data-based map towards the places where police intervention can make the biggest difference in reducing disparate outcomes. The goal of C4J is to provide police departments and communities the tools to redesign public safety in a way that is more equitable for everybody,” said Dr. Tracie Keesee, Co-founder of CPE and Senior Vice President of Justice Initiatives.

“After the murder of George Floyd ignited a Civil Rights reckoning across the world - and here in Seattle - police departments across the country are now seeking expert guidance on how to redesign public safety,” Seattle Police Chief Adrian Diaz said.  “The SPD is honored CPE has chosen to focus its considerable expertise in our City; to leverage data and behavioral science to direct our resources towards a better public safety model for everyone.”

Through C4J, data are continually leveraged to monitor department progress toward risk constraint or elimination, helping departments align their behaviors with community values. In the short-term, departments can expect to increase awareness about where organizational risks are prevalent.
