Ithaca, Tompkins County make 19 draft recommendations for changes to public safety

From the article: "...The recommendations were announced when the city published a draft report in response to New York State Executive Order 203 New York State Police Reform and Reinvention Collaborative. Cuomo announced the executive order in June when he said localities would have to adopt a plan for reform or else they would have to face significant cuts in state aid.

The city and the county consulted with the Center for Policing Equity, a research center based at Yale University, to draft their report.

“The City of Ithaca and Tompkins County join communities nationwide looking to redesign public safety in a way that is equitable for all their residents, especially the most vulnerable," said Tracie Keesee, co-founder and senior vice president of Justice Initiatives at the Center for Policing Equity. "It is hard. You're talking about trying to address and account for not just structural racism, but historical racism that is multi-generational reaching, that is mental health capacity impact, and it is something that is not going to be deliberate overnight nor solved overnight, and so I like to least ground expectations in the work...."
