Along with the entire team at the Center for Policing Equity, I want to congratulate Catherine Lhamon on her confirmation as Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights at the Department of Education. She has long been a friend to CPE, an avid supporter of our mission, and I am elated for her confirmation for a role so vital to our country’s future.
She will again lead the Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights with courage, conviction and commitment to students’ wellbeing, as she did in the Obama Administration. Catherine’s tireless advocacy for justice has shown throughout her career, including her time as Chair of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights. I have no doubt that she will continue to lead with the kind of moral clarity the nation needs, rebuilding the Office of Civil Rights to make U.S. schools more fair and equitable for all students.
At a time when communities are asking for solutions to violence that do not rely on punishment, it could not be more vital for the Department of Education to create space for innovation in academic excellence and community safety.
