We, at the Center for Policing Equity (CPE), want to wish retiring Norfolk, Virginia Police Chief Larry Boone all the best in the years ahead. CPE has worked closely with Chief Boone over the last two years, and we are deeply grateful for his leadership and dedication to the work of improving public safety through the COMPSTAT for Justice (C4J) program, a multi-stakeholder process designed by CPE to identify and help reduce racial disparities in policing.
C4J is community-engaged and data-driven, directly empowering law enforcement and community partners to identify inequities in policing and the risk factors for systematic biases that can drive these inequities. This process requires both care and diligence and is designed to last through personnel changes among stakeholders; Chief Boone’s bold foresight in engaging with C4J will reap continued benefits for the people of Norfolk under the leadership of Interim Police Chief Mike Goldsmith.
We look forward to continuing our collaboration with the Norfolk Police Department and community partners to facilitate meaningful changes in public safety. Using science to identify and help reduce the causes of racial disparities will improve policing outcomes now and in the future for everyone who calls Norfolk home.
