Center for Policing Equity Co-founder and CEO Dr. Phillip Atiba Goff Statement on the Attempted Assassination of Two Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputies

Today, Center for Policing Equity Co-founder and CEO Dr. Phillip Atiba Goff released the following statement on the attempted assassination of two Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputies.

The ambush and attempted assassination of two Los Angeles County Deputies in Compton, California should horrify every person of conscience. Our thoughts are with the deputies recovering from their injuries, as well as their colleagues and loved ones.

For those of us working toward more equitable public safety and an end to state-sponsored violence, this senseless act is doubly tragic. Not only did it leave two young officers gravely wounded, it perpetuates the violence plaguing communities already suffering from generations of discrimination, disinvestment, and government neglect.

Community leaders, along with the best in law enforcement, know that everyone is safer when public safety is built on trust rather than fear. Violence of any kind only serves to push us further away from that goal.
