Following a Madison police officer’s fatal shooting of Corey Ruiz, an investigation by local news outlet Wisconsin Watch found that, though Wisconsin law requires police agencies to report on serious uses of force, inconsistent standards at the state and national levels make it difficult to make comparisons between departments. CPE’s Matt Graham, Senior Data Analyst, provided insights about national use-of-force reporting rules:
“There’s really no uniformity,” said Matt Graham, a senior data analyst with the nonprofit Center for Policing Equity.
While some states — New Jersey, for instance — have standardized use-of-force reporting rules for law enforcement, Graham said, Wisconsin’s patchwork of policies more closely resembles the national norm.
